Last November 18, DabaweGNU once again held its monthly Linux at Kape session.  About 15-20 regular and list members attended the said event.  The topics discussed were "Linux Multi-media" by Nathaniel Jayme, "Knowledge Managment System" by Evamay dela Rosa, "Plone as KMS" by returning penguin Holden Hao, and "Web Hosting" by Job Oberio.

Nathaniel differentiated the different codecs used in multi-media.  He also discussed the benefits of using FOSS codecs such as Vorbis, Theora, Speex, etc.   Ffmpeg, the most widely used text-based multi-media conversion tool was also introduced to the group.

Evamay attended a Knowledge Management seminar organized by the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Inc. (DCCCII) and the Philippine Australian Human Resource Development Facility (PAHRDF).  She shared to the group some insights that she has learned from that seminar, especially, the importance of a KM system that supports documenting and sharing of knowledge among an organization's stakeholders.

Fresh from his study in Australia, Holden, gave a brief overview of the use of Plone as an organization's KM system.  He described the importance of using a single platform to facilitate integration. He discussed further the strengths and weaknesses of Plone.

Many system administrators know how difficult it can be to configure web and other Internet-based services.  Job showed the group how sysads can make their lives easier by using a tool called Web Host Manager and Cpanel.  The group was delighted to know of a painless way to configure Internet services.

This month's L&K session was another success.  The group enjoyed their cup of coffee and the various presentation and discussions.   The group enjoyed it so much that they did not even want to leave. ;)
