IBM will now use the Open Document Format

Tech giant IBM has decided as an organization to stop using Microsoft Office and use instead their own Lotus Symphony Office Suite which is a fork of OpenOffice and uses the Open Document file format. This is a very important news and it will surely assist other organizations currently weighing options to upgrade MS Office or to migrate to OpenOffice or other office suites which uses the Open Document Format.

Software Freedom Day, Trainings, and the New Computer Laboratory

Several activities have recently kept some DabaweGNU members. The celebration of Software Freedom Day was a good kick off to DabweGNU's training activities that followed it. DabaweGNU's computer lab was refurbished to accommodate the trainings and is now fully functional with the latest FOSS technology running.

Upgraded Website

The recent visit of Sreejith Sankarapillai, an IBM Corporate Service Corps volunteer who worked with some DabaweGNU members and officers, is starting to bear fruit within the organization. One of his recommendations was to improve the organization's website to increase web traffic and allow it to get good media mileage. This will assist the organization in reaching a wider audience and eventually increase its membership and allow the organization to market its services.

IBM Corporate Service Corps Volunteers Lecture at DabaweGNU Lab

Last July 31 and August 8, 2008, several IBM Corporate Service Corps (CSC) volunteers lectured at the DabaweGNU computer lab. This was part of their assistance to DabaweGNU, Inc. as one of their clients in the IBM CSC program. The CSC is IBM's way of giving back to the community by sending executives to various countries to assist organizations in their endeavors.

Linux Systems Administration Course (LiSA 1.3)

[NOTICE: The schedule has been postponed to July 14-18, 2008.] Once again, DabaweGNU, Inc. is offering its Linux Systems Administration I course for junior systems administrators. Public Beta Release of a Free/Open Source Electronic Health Record for the Philippine Health Care Industry

The first beta release of FFEHR, an electronic health record application commissioned by the ASEAN+3 node of the International Open Source Network (IOSN), was released to the public last April 28, 2008. This release comes six months after the University of the Philippines Manila-National Telehealth Center tasked free/open source software (F/OSS) programmer Nathaniel Jayme and Davao-based F/OSS organization DabaweGNU, Inc. to jointly develop FFEHR. This release marks an important milestone as the project now opens its doors for public review.

Major ICT Players Support MICT 2007
