IBM will now use the Open Document Format
Tech giant IBM has decided as an organization to stop using Microsoft Office and use instead their own Lotus Symphony Office Suite which is a fork of OpenOffice and uses the Open Document file format. This is a very important news and it will surely assist other organizations currently weighing options to upgrade MS Office or to migrate to OpenOffice or other office suites which uses the Open Document Format.
ASIA SOURCE 3
The International Open Source Network (IOSN) ASEAN+3 with support from InWEnt Capacity Building International, Germany, ASEAN Foundation, and Open Society Institute Information Program and co-organized by Tactical Technology Collective and Aspiration bring ASIA SOURCE 3 to the Philippines on 7 to 12 November 2009.
IOSN congratulates Philippine winners of SFD 2008
IOSN ASEAN+3 joins the Philippine open source community in congratulating DabaweGNU and freeIT as those among hundreds of Software Freedom Day 2008 Teams in 90 countries who made it to the top and special spots in this year's SFD event.
Software Freedom Day, Trainings, and the New Computer Laboratory
Several activities have recently kept some DabaweGNU members. The celebration of Software Freedom Day was a good kick off to DabweGNU's training activities that followed it. DabaweGNU's computer lab was refurbished to accommodate the trainings and is now fully functional with the latest FOSS technology running.
Upgraded Website
The recent visit of Sreejith Sankarapillai, an IBM Corporate Service Corps volunteer who worked with some DabaweGNU members and officers, is starting to bear fruit within the organization. One of his recommendations was to improve the organization's website to increase web traffic and allow it to get good media mileage. This will assist the organization in reaching a wider audience and eventually increase its membership and allow the organization to market its services.
IBM Corporate Service Corps Volunteers Lecture at DabaweGNU Lab
Last July 31 and August 8, 2008, several IBM Corporate Service Corps (CSC) volunteers lectured at the DabaweGNU computer lab. This was part of their assistance to DabaweGNU, Inc. as one of their clients in the IBM CSC program. The CSC is IBM's way of giving back to the community by sending executives to various countries to assist organizations in their endeavors.
Linux Systems Administration Course (LiSA 1.3)
[NOTICE: The schedule has been postponed to July 14-18, 2008.] Once again, DabaweGNU, Inc. is offering its Linux Systems Administration I course for junior systems administrators. The 5-day training is scheduled for June 30 - July 5, 2008. The venue will still be the PhilNits Computer Laboratory at the 5th floor of the DTI building in Monteverde St., Davao City.
Public Beta Release of a Free/Open Source Electronic Health Record for the Philippine Health Care Industry
The first beta release of FFEHR, an electronic health record application commissioned by the ASEAN+3 node of the International Open Source Network (IOSN), was released to the public last April 28, 2008. This release comes six months after the University of the Philippines Manila-National Telehealth Center tasked free/open source software (F/OSS) programmer Nathaniel Jayme and Davao-based F/OSS organization DabaweGNU, Inc. to jointly develop FFEHR. This release marks an important milestone as the project now opens its doors for public review.
Linux Systems Administration I (LiSA 1)
The Linux Systems Administration I course is designed for students and professional ICT practitioners who wish to gain fundamental knowledge on installing, configuring, and trouble shooting Linux systems. The participants will also learn how to integrate Linux systems and its network services into heterogeneous network infrastructures. After the course, the participants are expected to have the basic capabilities of junior systems administrators.
DabaweGNU signs MOA with UNDP IOSN ASEAN+3 to Assist in Developing an Open Source Electronic Health Record Software
DabaweGNU Inc., a Davao-city based IT organization advocating the use of free and open source software (FOSS), recently entered into an agreement to jointly develop an electronic health record (EHR) application with the UNDP-IOSN ASEAN+3, a regional Center of Excellence for FOSS in the ASEAN region.
Two DabaweGNU Members Attend Linux Trainers Training
InWEnt and IOSN ASEAN+3 recently sponsored a Linux Training of Trainers for Linux Professionals Institute (LPI) Level 2 last November 5-9, 2007 in UP Diliman, Quezon City. DabaweGNU, Inc. was fortunate to have been given 2 slots during the training.
Major ICT Players Support MICT 2007
DabaweGNU, Inc. is a member of the ICT Davao Inc. which is co-organizing the 6th MICT Congress and 1st BIMP-EAGA ICT Conference. DabaweGNU believes that this event is an important step towards the growth of the ICT industry in Davao and the rest of Mindanao. We encourage everyone to attend the conference on October 23-24, 2007 at the NCCC Mall. The ICT exhibits will run until the 27th.
Software Freedom Day 2007 - Davao City
The Insitute of Computing of the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP), DabaweGNU, Inc., USEP FOSS Club, and Davao Union Drug is joining the world in celebrating Software Freedom Day (SFD) on Saturday, September 15, 2007. The event will be held at the Social Hall of USEP in Obrero, Davao City from 10AM - 5PM. Admission is free.
DabaweGNU KURO Satellite Forum
DabaweGNU Inc., in support of the WebSining project of the Committee on Visual Arts (CVA) of the NCCA is inviting everyone to a FREE forum on "Multi-media Production and Intellectual Property Rights". The format of the forum will be a presentation followed by a discussion/demonstration.
Linux at Kape: The Penguin Returns
Last November 18, DabaweGNU once again held its monthly Linux at Kape session. About 15-20 regular and list members attended the said event. The topics discussed were "Linux Multi-media" by Nathaniel Jayme, "Knowledge Managment System" by Evamay dela Rosa, "Plone as KMS" by returning penguin Holden Hao, and "Web Hosting" by Job Oberio.
Solon files bill requiring gov’t to use open source software
Free/ Open Source Software has been growing in popularity in the Philippines. Now, Congressman Teddy Casiño of Bayan Muna, has filed a bill in congress mandating the use of FOSS in the government.
Ruby on Rails Presentation Slides and References
